Witches and aliens and Hobbits – oh my!
Here’s a contentious topic among book lovers: which series of books is your favourite? With so very, very many from which to choose I have narrowed my choices down to two: the Wicked series and the Hitchhiker’s series.
Gregory Maguire’s ongoing saga, three books in, is a wonderfully written take on what happened before and after Dorothy landed in the magical land of Oz. An idea similar to Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, the three books extrapolate beyond the movie, expanding the story backward and forward to include the Wicked Witch of the West’s family and well beyond. The books are in turn hilarious, dark and unabashedly satirical. I can’t recommend them highly enough and am frequently lending out my copies.
As for the Hitchhiker’s series…well, how can you not love these books? Clever, hysterical, original and filled with sage advice for travelers (don’t panic!), I have read the entire series many times over. The dry wit leaps off the page, beautifully illustrating the story of a common man trying to come to terms with incredibly bizarre turns of events. Douglas Adams was a genius as far as I’m concerned and we lost him too early.
There are, of course, other great series’ out there from the Lord of the Rings to the Harry Potter series (so I’ve heard…). What else should people be reading? Which series is your favourite?
Wicked. Easily. But you knew that…I like to believe I’m the reason you started reading them in the first place!

You get full credit for that one! Of course, I’m now very impatiently waiting for the fourth book.

One of my favourites is the Age of Unreason series. 4 or 5 books. Issac Newton discovers Philosphers Mecury and a new kind of ‘science’. It’s populated by historical figures like Ben Franklin, Voltare, Peter the Great, ect. They’re fun reads, not too heavy and move at a good clip. I must have read the entire series 3 or 4 times by now, and am currently on book Two again. Good beach/cottage reading.

My problem is that I don’t have a favourite series. I read so many that it seems that i’m gobbling up the stories to fast to have a favourite. I love to read. I’m not big on re-reading (myself), so I continue to feed my addiction with more new and facinating books.

I don’t think that’s a problem, my dear. You don’t have to have a favourite series! Clearly, you love too much. 🙂 (And again, that’s not a bad thing!)

As usual I hold tight to my believe of Harry Potter being the BEST ever. But recently I discovered two other series’s: The Fire Thief by Terry Deary [3 books and so ironical!!] and The Vampire Academy. I have only read one book in the VA series but is avidly searching for the rest and will buy them and read them again and again and again and again. That’s how amazing that single book was!
loving the blog, keep it up!

I can’t decide.
It was a fairly recent read, but perhaps Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials triology is my favourite of all time.
When I was young, I loved the Anne of Green Gables books.
