R.I.P. Guru

The music industry lost an icon today.  Keith Elam, aka Guru, was an amazing MC with an original, intelligent, aggressive but also uplifting message. He’d been making music since the ’80s with is partner, Solar, in Gang Starr and had solo albums that were unlike anything I’d heard.

I can’t recommend his Jazzmatazz series enough. Amazing collaborations with Erykah Badu, Branford Marsalis, The Roots, Angie Stone, Isaac Hayes.  My personal favourite is the third album in the series, “Street Soul.”

A few of my fave tracks:

“Keep Your Worries” ft. Angie Stone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BHBecjKSl4

“All I Said” ft. Macy Gray & Pharrell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRqrEjjKuK4

“Moment of Truth”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lH3hrtp1T84&feature=player_embedded

“Transit Ride” ft. Branford Marsalis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwHbYHLPS3Y

“Plenty” ft. Erykah Badu: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrlUCTQbdf0

If you haven’t heard his stuff, check it out. He was pretty prolific over his 20-year career. A sad, sad day.

One Response to “R.I.P. Guru”

  1. I too mourn his passing today. When I first picked up Guru’s and Primo’s(DJ/Producer Extrodinairre, Premier) debut offering “No more Mr. Nice guy” on vinyl when I was 15, I became a fan for life. I had the priviledge of seeing them perform a few years ago at the Kool Haus and was floored how they connected to the audience. I own all but the last releases. Do yourself a favour and check out the tracks” Just to get a rep.” ” Check the technique” “Who’s Gonna take the weight?” and the title track from the album”Step in the arena.” I could type all night about what I loved about them but to sum it up as Guru put it best in the track from the album Code of the streets” Its mostly the voice…” and the production that sets the standard for all producers and DJ’s today. RIP. :(……
